Stanford Graduation Disrupted by Mass Walkout During Sundar Pichai Speech
Dozens of students—estimated by local media to be as many as 200—walked out of their Stanford University graduation ceremony as Google CEO Sundar Pichai took the stage to deliver the keynote address. The students were protesting Google’s controversial work with the U.S. government, with one sign reading "ICE spies with Google AI," while some graduates waved Palestinian flags following student group calls to protest Google's ties to Israel. Pichai, a Stanford alumnus, sidestepped the AI controversy in his speech but made light of the situation with a joke about his last name. This incident highlights a growing wave of campus hostility against tech leaders this graduation season. While the Stanford walkout targeted specific government and international contracts, other commencements across the U.S. saw speakers like former Google CEO Eric Schmidt booed over anxieties regarding AI's impact on future jobs.
